Transparency

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

I followed a link on the DefectiveByDesign to the amazon.com Windows Vista overview page. I skimmed through to the Full Business Edition (yikes!), and noticed the fabulous new stuff Vista has, such as … transparency.

It's called transparency

Welcome to 2001, Microsoft. A new era.

28 weeks

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

We are fully on track, with a foetus of 29 weeks, 5 days ± 1 week, 4 days according to the medical software used by our gynaecologist. She said that all was well, and carefully avoided showing anything by which we might guess our baby’s sex :-) We saw a fast beating heart, its lungs, its legs … it was simply awesome. Next check in four weeks.

The Lees of Laughter's End

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Yay! There seems to be a new short story by Steven Erikson on its way to the PS Publishing press. Following Blood Follows and The Healthy Dead, the story takes up again with your favourite necromancers, Bauchelain and Korbal Broach. Additionally, all three stories can be ordered together in a box. This will be the first time I won’t be going for a signed version, as Steven Erikson will apparently only sign the hardcover edition (500 copies). I hope to get my hands on a paperback version (or semi-hardcover), of which 1000 copies will be printed.

Annoying phone calls

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Since a few weeks, we’ve been receiving calls from +32 xxx xxx xxx. They do not answer, nor is it a fax machine. The number seems to indicate it is a mobile phone dialing me. Listening closely does not give any indication of background noise either.

Update: It turns out that the aunt of Veerle’s mom recently acquired a cellphone, but does not know how to use it. Kinda hard to teach a 80+ year old how to operate a cell phone, even though it’s basically dial and hang up :-)

Lesson: tell your relatives to let you know when aged people are going to play with new toys.

Alcohol at work

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

I received a flyer today in which the university encourages its employees to think about alcohol usage at work. I know of no people in my immediate vicinity who have alcohol problems, but higher echelons seem to take this matter very serious, as they should. However, upon reading the flyer, I noticed a page on which the reasonable amount of alcohol a healthy person may drink, is discussed. Three rules are presented:

  • On average, drink no more than three glasses a day (two for women).
  • At most, drink five glasses a time (three for women).
  • Don’t drink any alcohol at least two days per week.

So, basically, don’t drink over the weekend, as you probably will want to remember the fun you had. And spread the 21 drinks you’re allowed to have accross the five other days. That’s four drinks per day, except on Friday, when you can start the weekend by having an extra drink.

It seems to me that the rules stated above are well beyond what’s reasonable. In my opinion, somebody who even drinks but one glass a day, can get addicted, though it may not seem too bad. At first.

Dear Jack Bauer

Monday, January 8th, 2007

IPv4-addresses are made up of four numbers ranging from 0 to 255. They are nowhere close to 292.x.y.z. Really. After 5 series, somebody ought to have mentioned this to those writing the 24 scripts. How hard can it be to have a IT-knowledgable person review the stuff they are putting in there?

I think that a good show gets the details correct. It somehow lessens the tension when I have to get a good laugh at things like that. I’m quite sure other things are wrong too, though perhaps it’s easier to get a weapons specialist helping out than finding somebody with a decent degree in computerscience.

That said, I thought season 5 started out quite well. A small drawback is that fact that people again seem to think Jack would kill Palmer. Duh.
