It has taken a while, from the removal of the side wheels to the actual willingness to try riding a bike with but two wheels (no, he is not yet moving to a unicycle) and finally to succeeding in staying upright, but today we reached a milestone.
Last Sunday, Thibault, Edwige, Keoni and Zeno came over for some food and relaxing. when the subject of biking came up, Elias wanted to try once more. Whereas I would have used a stick to keep the bike upright, Thibault did not waste time, put Elias on his bike and gave him a push and his feel for balance did the rest. He managed to reach the end of the garden without falling over, and that success was repeated several times.
Today then, was the big day. On the pavement, a hard underground, unforgiving for falling cyclists. But his confidence was high, high enough to conquer the sidewalk, which is slightly slanted to allow the draining of rain.
This means that we have to get an buy him a new bike (a promise made before we took of the side wheels) and that we can actually go to school on a bike next year. The latter has the nice side effect that I can take Nathan along without losing time by going on foot, when he starts in school.
Update: Since today (Wednesday, June 24), he can also start by himself. A little encouragement by refusing to walk over and give him a push can do wonders ...)
