Today marked Elias' very first day at school. We had been trying to prepare him and ourselves (!) for it, during the last few days. This morning, we managed to roll out of bed at 7:26. While bread was fetched, Elias was awoken, washed and dressed. His bag was packed, the camera was lying in plain sight as to not forget it, and we were pretty much set to go. One minor drawback: shoes. Elias has received cool new shoes, but they lack extra soles. And the soles from his other shoes were slightly too small to fit. But, departure was targetted at 8:40, and at 8:42 we were driving to school. It's only a one minute drive.
We were taken to Elias' class by a friendly woman, who checked his name off her list and introduced us to juffrouw Els, who will be Elias' teacher this year. We spotted a girl from kindergarten who had been in Elias' group there, and it did not take long before he went exploring, seeing that she did the same. He snatched a few plastic fish from the cupboard, gave us a kiss and a hug and that was that.
At noon, Elias was waiting patiently at the gate for us to pick him up. Apparently he had been very good! When asked if he would like to return in the afternoon, or if he would rather stay at home, he reponded very clearly that he would go back. Well, that solves one particular problem. Odds are that he'll be dead on his feet by this evening. The meal was rushed a bit, for we had only one hour to cook and eat - not having counted on his wish to go back. We managed to be only five minutes late when he returned, where we had to drop him off at the gate. Snif.
We made it well on time this evening to pick Elias up. He was lined up, until Juf Els spotted us and guided Elias to the gate.
We had to make a small detour to post some stuff, and barely five minutes after Elias was seated in the car, he was fast asleep.
