Kid's corner

A small anecdote. Elias went to the hairdresser with me today. Not the guy we usually go to; he recently became a father, or so I was told, and he doesn't seem to answer his phone when we ring for an appointment. So we headed out to the Carré Coiffure where one of Elias friends from kindergarten goes. They have a both a female and male salon, and we did not need an appointment, so I took him there, because Veerle was feeling unwell.

After being pointed to the right section of the shop, I sat down in a cool (fake?) leather chair, Elias on my lap and surrounded by a stack of Ché and Snoecks. After having declined a drink, I picked up the Ché on top of the stack, and tried to find something that was fit for Elias' eyes too. They had a nice interview with Adriaan Van den Hoof, so I started reading that. After I finished, I put down the book, and semi-immediately Elias pointed to the Snoecks 2008, featuring Katherine Heigl on the cover. That book dad. Looking at girls ('meisjes kijken'), he said. So I picked it up and tried to find something not naked -- not that he cannot see that, but not in a sexualised form, please, after all, we're all humans -- and we ended up looking at (cool) zeppelins and fish. (I had completely forgotten about the Cory Doctorow interview, dang!).

So, girls in a state of undress attract his attention. I wonder what that will give when he reaches puberty. Or the beach next summer, for that matter, especially given the fact that Elias says out loud what he thinks, be it that somebody is fat or not.
