I came home this evening at about 21:00. When I entered our living room, I heard stumbling and footsteps in Elias' room. Because Nathan cannot get out of bed, I figured Elias was -- for the very first time -- out of bed when he should be asleep, as he went to bed at about 19:30. So, I took a walk upstairs to check on matters, expecting him to be up looking at his brother or something similar. To my astonishment, however, the open door revealed that the light in the room was in fact turned on. So, I entered the room, trying to hide my laughter.
Every morning when we need to wake Elias up so he can go to school on time (and I can get my train, semi-on time), he behaves exactly like we do. Keeping his eyes firmly closed, without pressing them hard, he remains unmoving on his bed. Pulling away the covers has no (immediate) effect. When he does wake up because we poke him gently, he sits up, reaches for the covers and pulls them over him, effectively ignoring our presence. While it is quite funny to see, it is also pretty frustrating at times, because we are on a tight schedule.
Elias has been ill the last few days, plagued by die-a-rhea. And this morning, he woke us, when he vomitted in bed. He was totally confused, but he did manage to sleep extra long afterward. No fever of any kind, so we think it'll pass.
We bought an AngelCare today. Yesterday, Nathan felt rather cold and looked pale when we woke him for his last meal. So, for safety, we invested in a monitor that supposedly keeps track of his movements. I fear his mattress might be too thick of soft to pass on any movement, but we'll find out soon enough. Although he registered negative on his SIDS test, we would still like some hi-tech assurance he's ok. Obviously nothing can replace a watching parent, but alas, we need to sleep too.
The first night was not that hard as I had expected. I slept at least a few hours, and so did Veerle. Nathan got his last feed at 02:00 AM. He is a slow drinker, who likes to suckle, but does not really drink all that much. So he has lost quite some weight over the first day, more than expected. He now weighs 3.560 kg, which is still good, but he must not lose much more. We hope that he will rebound once the milk production comes up to speed. His bilirubin level is too high as well, so he will spend some time under an UV (?) light today.
